“Balloons Kill Sea and Wildlife”This is the perfect example of a headline that will definitely grab the attention of the general public. However let's consider the following facts...
- Most balloons that end up in our Harbours and Waterways are because the
general public simply let them go after their party, instead of popping
them and disposing of them correctly.
- National Parks and Wildlife
Services as well as Taronga Zoo do not have any documented cases where balloons
have caused the death of any animals.
- Both of these organisations have
appeared in the media denouncing balloons as bad for the environment.
Where is the evidence?
- The Clean Up Australia Day reports identified
that 1% of all rubbish collected was in the rubber category. Most of
that was rubber tyres. Balloon litter was so insignificant that it did
not rate its own sub category.
- Any professionally released balloons
that end up in the waterways are so small as not to cause any harm to the
sea creatures who may ingest them.
- Most Balloon and Party Industry
Professionals are Mums and Dads, and have the same concerns for the
environment as you do. The Party Industry are not environmental vandals. On the
contrary the Balloon Industry plants more trees as it grows, and feel that we
are making a valuable contribution to the greening of the planet.
